Cold War Presidents
During the Cold War period the United States underwent 10 different presidencies. Of which each having their own personalities and methods of action to address the common problem at hand.
Quick Facts: Franklin Roosevelt 1933-1945 encompassed the beginning of the Cold War from the Yalta conference forward which setup the terms for Germanys defeat. Harry Truman 1945-1953. The Berlin blockade occurred during his presidency which encompassed all of Berlin from allied help and the Allied forces performed air drops of supplies to the people until the ban was lifted. Dwight D. Eisenhower 1953-1963 During his tenure the Soviets boasted about long range missiles they had which to check on these installations the US flew top secret U-2 reconnaissance planes over the Soviet Union to take aerial pictures. This ended in 1960 when one was shot down. John F. Kennedy 1961-1963; Check out the Cuban Missile Crisis page for more information during Kennedy’s term. Lyndon B. Johnson 1963-1969; Although the build up of forces in Vietnam occurred under Kennedy’s administration much of the fighting and major battles took place under Johnson requiring strategic planning. Richard Nixon 1969-1974; Signed the SALT treaty to limit nuclear weapons and other agreed upon statements between the countries allowed for better communication and relations between the two. Gerald Ford 1974-1977 After replacing Nixon, Ford failed to appeal to the general population or even the general congress and failed to get many things approved. Jimmy Carter 1977-1981 Much to the same with Ford, Carter ran into many issues as well. OPEC oil cap, Afghanistan war funding and Iranian hostage situation for 444 days. Ronald Reagan 1981-1989; The fall of the Berlin Wall occurred during his presidency and Reagan even previously at speeches famously quoted as saying “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"
