The Iron Curtain
Taken place on March 5th, 1946 in the gymnasium of Westminster College in Fulton, MO. Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, delivered his post-World War II speech. He was introduced by President Harry Truman. Churchill made it clear that the US and United Kingdom had a primary duty going forward to guard the homes of the common people from the horrors of another war, his plan was to put together a United Nations Organization where countries would come to the defense of other countries.
The term “Iron Curtain” symbolized the efforts of the Soviet Union to block itself from open contact with the West and non-Soviet-controlled areas. On the East side of the Iron Curtain were the countries that were connected to or influenced by the Soviet Union. On either side of the Iron Curtain were states that developed their own international economic and military alliances. source: http://www.winstonchurchill.org/learn/speeches/speeches-of-winston-churchill/120-the-sinews-of-peace |
