The Beginings
On July 17th, 1945 US President Harry Truman, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and Soviet Premier Josef Stalin came together to discuss the fate of Europe. The leaders shook on an agreement to divide Germany into zones of occupation known as Allied-Occupied Germany. But the Soviet Union soon found themselves at war as they were convinced that the US intended to destroy communism which led to the Soviets' eventually controlling all of Eastern Europe forcing the US and many Western European countries to form an alliance against the Soviet Union.
And the Race is ON
One of the main concerns leading up to the beginning of the Cold War came out of the end of World War II and the United States use of the atomic bomb. This lead to a full scale arms race.

The CIA is Developed
The Central Intelligence Agency was founded on September 18,1947 by the Truman Administration to gather information on the Soviets Union and other countries.

The Iron Curtain was a metaphor made prominent by former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill referencing the barrier created by the Soviet Union after WWII preventing contact between the West and non-communist areas.
