The Berlin Wall
|
The berlin wall was constructed by the Soviet Union on August 13, 1961 and was built practically over night. The Soviets constructed the wall to gain better control over the people in East Berlin who were fleeing into democratic West Berlin. The wall is important because it replaced the barbed
wire fence that was installed at the end of WWII and it demostrates the true feelings that the people in East Berlin had toward Communism. The
construction of the wall demonstrates the insecurety of the Communist Party, they were only able to hold the people of East Berlin by effectively constructing a prison. Freedom was so important to some people in East Berlin that they died or were imprisoned trying to escape. The wall solidifed the fate of East Germany and
the separation and Communist control would last until 1991 when the wall was finally torn down.
