President Reagan was nicknamed "the great communicator" because of his ability to reach out to other members of State and speak candidly about his beliefs. He was quoted refering to the USSR as "the evil empire". Many na-sayers were concerned that Reagan would be a loose cannon, shoot first and ask questions later, type of President. "President Ronald Reagan says in a speech at the Brandenburg Gate: "General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and eastern Europe, if you seek liberalisation, come here to this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" (Chronik Der Mauer, 1987)
